FARMINGTON – The day for candidacies for the next local elections on November 2 is Tuesday August 24. There will be 32 municipal, school board and sanitation / water / soil district seats on the ballot.

The San Juan County Clerk’s Office is preparing for candidates to run for 12 municipal government positions, 13 school / college board elections and seven water / soil / sanitation districts. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 24, depending on San Juan County. Clerk Tanya Shelby.

Shelby said she wanted the community to know that they can only apply on this day, during these hours and without exception.

This is the first time the county clerk’s office has handled elections for the four municipalities, Shelby said.

The Local Elections Act, enacted in April 2019, consolidated local elections with regular local elections held every November in odd-numbered years, according to the website of the New Mexico Secretary of State.

Shelby hopes the changes will help voter turnout by preventing “voter fatigue.”

A flyer from the county clerk’s office listed all the elections for the next election.

Municipal government:

• Districts 2, 4 and 5 of the Aztec City Commission;

• Mayor of the town of Bloomfield, municipal judge and three councilors;

• A part-time municipal judge;

• Farmington Town Council, Districts 1 and 2;

• Councilor for the Town of Kirtland.

The following school district seats will be on the ballot:

• 1, 3 and 5 for the Aztec municipal school district;

• 2, 4 and 5 for the Bloomfield School District;

• 1, 3 and 4 for the Central Consolidated School District;

• 2 and 3 for Farmington municipal schools.

Other competitions:

The second and third district seats on the San Juan College board of trustees are also on the ballot.

The third and fourth positions for the San Juan Soil and Water Conservation District, as well as positions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 for the Valley Water and Sanitation District, are also listed.

For candidates interested in filing documents, Shelby urges them to contact the county clerk’s office and verify that their voter registration information is correct.

This information helps determine a candidate’s eligibility to run for the seat for which they are applying and could prevent a candidate from running for that position.

The last day to register to vote for this election is October 5 at 5 p.m.

Early voting begins on October 5th at the County Clerk’s Office at 100 S. Oliver Dr. in Aztec. This is also the day that postal ballots become available.
