The ADPD called the planning authority and the Water Services Corporation “incompetent” and their failure in water conservation.
ADPD candidate and Deputy Secretary General Sandra Gauci noted that following the first rains of the season, various residential areas were flooded.
She added that the flooding is seriously affecting traffic and in Qormi it is causing sewage overflow. Gauci noted that millions of euros of EU funds have been spent on flood relief projects, but water is still wasted due to a lack of planning and developments that do not support collection. some water.
ADPD President Carmel Cacopardo said the Qormi Valley is just one of the many valleys that have been developed.
He added that the valley is a natural waterway and due to development in the area the water is clogged and mixes with sewage.
“The responsible authorities did not ensure that rainwater incident on the roof of the developed properties was not discharged into the sewers, but rather was collected in a water cistern,” Cacopardo said.
He pointed out that for 140 years rainwater has been collected in water cisterns through legislation, but currently the PA and WSC fail to handle this responsibility.
Cacopardo said the PA did not verify that new developments were fitted with water cisterns, while the WSC did not verify whether the connection of drains from houses to the main sewer was only used for water. waste and not for rainwater.
“When the Planning Authority and the Water Services Corporation do their jobs well, we will have less stormwater on our roads after a storm. It would also be rare for the main sewer to be overloaded with rainwater and therefore overflow into our streets following a storm, ”Cacopardo said.
