Plow tracker and more VDOT resources as winter approaches

(WDBJ) – As people are asked to avoid the roads Sunday and Monday, work for the Virginia Department of Transportation will be in full effect.

Multiple resources, including the ability to track snowplows, are offered by VDOT:

“Significant snow/ice accumulation is expected such that travel conditions will deteriorate from Sunday and continue through Monday.

· Snow plow operators will work on highways and major roads first, so secondary roads and neighborhood streets will be covered in deep snow before crews plow them.

· In order not to slow down or interfere with snow removal operations, citizens are asked not to park vehicles in streets or cul-de-sacs or leave them on the roadways.

· Road conditions are available at www.511Virginia.org. The VDOT Customer Service Center can be reached by calling 1-800-367-7623 or at my.vdot.virginia.gov. Report emergencies to 911.

· When the snow reaches two inches or more, plows can be tracked at http://vdotplows.org.

VDOT asks people to avoid non-essential travel. For those who must drive, come prepared with essentials.

· Keep at least half a tank of gas in the vehicle

· Keep a blanket in the vehicle

· Keep winter clothes in the vehicle: winter coat, heavy shoes or boots, gloves and hat

A snow shovel and a bag of sand or kitty litter

Booster cables, flashlight and batteries, ice scraper, phone charger and map (in case your phone battery runs out)

· Non-perishable snacks and water »
