Murder trial hearing
The High Court will decide next month whether two boys accused of murdering Ōkaihau man Michael John Biggins last year when they were just 12 and 15 are fit to stand trial. At a hearing in the Whangārei High Court on Thursday, Judge Simon Brewer said the court had reports from various experts showing that each of the boys was fit to plead the charge, but there were doubts as to their fitness to stand trial. The judge allocated half-day hearings to decide this issue for each of the boys on October 22. Meanwhile, each of the defendants continues to be taken into the custody of a youth facility for a jury trial scheduled for March 6 next year.
